Dear Friends of Berlin Oil Connection
The harvest of the new year has just begun for us in our field in Southern Laconia. Soon the first olive oil will be produced, and we will know its characteristics. Everything seems to have started normally. Although in recent years the weather conditions have changed, for now, it does not seem to be happening in our field. As every year, this year we will bring to Berlin the high-quality extra virgin olive oil from our field for all of you. Our oil is produced separately at the mill, which is why we always know that its quality can be guaranteed for all of you. This year we expect that the 5-liter canisters will arrive in Berlin in early February 2025. We could perhaps bring the 5-liter canisters earlier, but the problem is that the olive oil needs some time in our barrels. The reason is that we do not filter the olive oil so...
Several of my friends send me photos of the meals they prepare with our olive oil. It's something I absolutely love and I would like to thank them so much for it. Here we see the traditional, Greek salad. A healthy dish of the Mediterranean diet that should never be missing from our table.
How do we prepare a Greek salad for two people? It is very simple: We need two tomatoes (preferably organic), one red onion, half a cucumber (medium size), organic oregano (preferably from the southern Peloponnese), Kalamata olives, a green paprika and optionally feta cheese on top. We chop everything and mix it all together with our extra virgin olive oil and optionally a splash of vinegar. Within a few minutes the Greek salad is on your table....
My flamingo farm friends, Artur and Thanh started a social media campaign to help me sell the rest of the last olive oil from the 2022 harvest. Through this post I would like to thank them warmly. If you want to get this special offer, visit cafe Laidak in Boddinstrasse 42 or send me an email
You can also get a box at German Polish bookstore in Neukolln...
If you are looking for extra virgin olive oil from one farm in Laconia, but you live in Prenzlauer Berg and Neükolln seems to be a bit far away, don't worry. You can buy our olive oil at the market located on Seelower strasse next to Schönhauser Allee. My friend Kengy is there with his stand which is specialized in good wine as well as other goodies. It is worth it to pay a visit.
So you can buy Christmas gifts for your loved ones. The market on Seelower Strasse takes place every Saturday from 10am to 4pm...
What is adulterated olive oil and how widespread is its circulation in the super market?
Often it is a mixture of 2 oils, extra virgin olive oil and usually sunflower oil. This type of adulteration can be classified as extra virgin olive oil by some brands in the olive oil market. It can be further degraded when mixed with various olive oils of dubious quality from different countries around Europe, Middle East or North Africa. In the worst case, it is a mixture of soybean and sunflower oil, to which chlorophyll and beta-carotene substances are added. You should be especially careful when checking the labels of these oils.
How can I tell if an olive oil is adulterated? Are there simple methods that can help to identify a bad olive oil?
This is the most important question. How can we know if the olive oil we buy is adulterated? Here are some useful tips.
Put it in the fridge
You can do this simple test...
Every year in autumn or winter I make a visit to the Southern Peloponnese. My aim is to look for new high quality products from the region. So this year we went to the mountain of Parnonas to spend three days in the mountain and combine it with this purpose. We found ourselves in Kosmas where the autumn landscape dominated every corner of the village.
The central square of the village is a real gem. The large plane trees and the traditional architecture of the houses really give a unique character to the place. The food in the small taverns is also unique. Everything is local and the smells make you hungry all the time. Our first stop was at the village square in one of the central cafes. There we drank tsipouro and tasted the smoked trout that is brought from the opposite mountain, Taygetos, and specifically from the village of Kastori located at its foothills. We ate stew, mountain...
Dear Berlin Oil Connection friends.
As you all know, the situation with olive oil production this year is particularly critical. In many regions of Europe, production has dramatically decreased. As a practical result, prices have exploded this year. However, this year's harvest for us has started normally and without any particular problems. The quality and characteristics of the extra virgin olive oil from our field are at a very good level again this year.
However, the cost of bringing it to Berlin is very high. Inflation and climatic conditions, which are responsible for the decline in production, are the main enemy.
That is why this year we will start our campaign earlier than planned. You can pre-order the amount of oil you need for next year, in this way you help us to bring it to Berlin. So we can keep a better price for all of you. For more info and orders you can always contact Berlin Oil Connection here: https://berlinoilconnection.de/en/contact/...
A walk in the local market of agricultural products in Skala Laconia was something I had wanted to do for a long time. But something always came up and I postponed it for the next time I would visit this small town located in the heart of the plain of Laconia. For those who don't know, Skala, is one of the most important centers of agricultural production in Laconia. The main agricultural product exported is citrus fruits (mainly oranges). Farmers in Skala produce of course also excellent quality vegetables, such as tomatoes and other vegetables. Skala is a centre of economic life in Laconia. The local market is held every Tuesday in a central point of the town and there are permanent places for producers from Skala and the surrounding villages in the area. The excellent quality olive oil soap that you can buy in Berlin from Berlin Oil Connection is produced by our friend Zoe there.
A sunny Tuesday last...
As beautiful as the neighbourhood schillerkiez around the Tempelhof Park is, so is the market that takes place every Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm at the Herfurtplatz markt (Shillermarkt) in the streets around the church. I of course, as a neighbour, have more reasons to love this market and my participation. You can't imagine how much I enjoy talking to the people I meet anyway on my walks and in the beautiful cafes of Neukolln such as Laidak. Okay I know, it's true there aren't that many beautiful cafes left in the neighborhood, however there is still a beautiful energy in several of them.
However, the market around the church is not only beautiful because it has beautiful smiling faces that take a little walk every Saturday. It's beautiful because all of the colleagues seem to enjoy it too. Really how beautiful is the whole mosaic of different languages spoken by both those who visit the market and those...
